762x39 Sale at Academy Sports?

Bought a blue box Monarch 762x39 ammo at Academy Sports for a friend last night and it rang up at $2.99. Normally these cost $4.89 and the display card still lists this price.

He decided to try it and bought 4 more boxes this morning @ $2.99. The receipt shows a down arrow next to the price.

Don't know if this is a sale, a price drop, or a mistake. Just thought I would throw it out there since it seems like a good price and someone else might get a good deal.

Not familiar with that brand. Do they have military type primers? Isn't it advisable not to use ammo with soft primers in my Russian SKS?

Re: 762x39 Sale at Academy Sports?

It is FMJ Steel case Laquer coated made in Russia. I have read it is Barnaul.

Edit: While checking the spelling for Barnaul I found that it is a sale and it supposedly runs until 10/27/2008.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to the soft primer question.

Wow. You save like $10!
You could buy an ounce of silver with that $10.....if you could find any at that price.:bawling:

can you order on the internet

Re: 762x39 Sale at Academy Sports?

Mick, it doesn't look like you can order online.

JJ, the store at "I10 west of the 610 loop" reportedly "had plenty on the shelf" yesterday.

Here is a link to some info I found posted by an employee: http://forums.gunboards.com/showthre...071#post526071

SHTF, I agree, As Franklin said a Hamilton saved is a Hamilton earned or something like that. If someone wanted to by 100 boxes they could save nearly $200. You could buy a roll of prospectors....if you could find them at that price. :censored: But who in the world would want 2,000 rounds of ammo? :elefant:

Re: 762x39 Sale at Academy Sports?

That Monarch stuff is just as good as Wolf IMO. I've used the 7.62x39, .223, 9mm, and 30-06 in this brand so far. Not one misfire or any other problem yet. I'm still working on 500rnds of 7.62x39 I bought over a year ago when it was $3 something for 20rnds.

Damn $149.50 for 1000 rounds cash and carry. I'll be there in the morning. Normally they have the same brand in .223 for the same price. I'll look into that as well.

Thanks for the tip! They normally don't advertise ammo sales, just a few hunting calibers rarely in the sunday ad.

Went to my local Academy to check this out since I was out that way today. There was no "SALE" sign on the shelf, so I asked one of the clerks for a price-check since I heard they were on sale. Another clerk nearby said they go on sale tomorrow for $2.99. I asked if it was other Monarch calibers as well, or just 7.62x39, and he said it was that caliber only. He also recommended I get there early....

I would bet any Russian 7.62x39 has military-type(hard) primers and most of the problems (slam-fires) were with American-made ammo (Winchester, Remington, etc).

Re: 762x39 Sale at Academy Sports?

Yep, got the last three cases at my local Academy today also.

Three were on the shelf so I set two of em on the counter while I went to get a cart.

When I returned, someone had gotten the one I left on the shelf so I ended up with two cases (500/case) and was able to scrounge up 44 more individual boxes from a display . Bought an ammo case and loaded em up.

They even had some inexpensive Monarch 308, but I want better ammo for that caliber.

I have an Ak-47 type which only my gunsmith has fired. It's the SA 85M Hungarian... the one with the thumb-hole. I don't think it's ever been fired except by my gunsmith.

Since I know nothing about the AK, I'm gonna need some of you guys advice;
like should I replace the stock with a polymer with a pistol grip. Don't think I want a bunch of Bling on such a close in battle rifle...maybe a light...Drifting my on stuff here..sorry.

I wasn't really going to mention the ammo subject so we would have a little lead-time, but I think there will be plenty available for a while anyway...til the shipping stops.

Re: 762x39 Sale at Academy Sports?

Picked up 1000rnds at my local Academy today. These were the last two 500rnd boxes I could find in the place. No "sale" signs anywhere. $2.99 for 20rnds. Normally this location has a pallet in the middle of the isle full of 500rnd boxes. Plenty of .223 left, of course they want $5.29! for 20rnds. This was at the 290 and 1960 location. I'm going to try the Highway 6 and Westheimer location tomorrow.

Thanks again for the tip!:10_1_20:

Off topic: Went to Gander Mountain after I left Academy. They marked down their M44 Mosin Nagants to $89.99(from a laughable $149.99 last time I visited) and also marked down the 91/30's to $99.99. They still have a few surplus 300rnd cases of russian 7.62x54 heavy ball corrosive for $69.99. This is hidden very well in their store, unmarked, underneath the used gun displays, all the way in the back, wrapped in black plastic and not marked with any kind of price or description. It's like they don't want you to buy it.

Gander Mountain also has 250rnd Remington UMC 9mm boxes for $48 still. This is brass cased stuff, fmj, and a little bit cheaper than Academy.

Re: 762x39 Sale at Academy Sports?

Got there about 1/2 hour after they opened, and I found one 500 rd box left hidden among the mountains of .223. Then I went to the shelf and grabbed everything there. I was about to give up on finding more when I looked on top of the gun counter and saw 3 of the half cases ripped open to display the boxes. I took all of them, too, for a grand total of 114 boxes. Then for good measure I threw in 5 boxes of the Monarch .308 @ $8.99 (I figure my Saigas would like them just fine.)

After I got everything out to the car, I went back in to pick up some odds and ends I needed. Swung back by the guns and ammo and noticed they only had one 500 rd box left of monarch .308, so I took it, too.

BTW, during my time in the hunting section, I heard lots of "get it while you can" comments....

I went after work today to see what I could find at the I10/99 store in Houston... all out. thinkin about calling to see if they are gonna get another shipment in.

still plenty of .223 - case boxes marked -privi partizan-

I've often wondered why the necks on the Academy Monarch are discolored when you get the surplus ppz - its nice and polished..

havent noticed too much difference in performance

Thanks! I reload cast bullets, so it makes sense for me to spend a little more up front to get something I can reuse.

Re: 762x39 Sale at Academy Sports?

Went back to my local store today to see if they got more in after I cleaned them out last Sunday. They had 5 cases (10 1/2 case boxes), plus another 1.5 cases on the counter display. I picked up 3 cases, and after loading them in the car, I decided to go back into the store to use the restroom before the long drive home.

On the way out, I figured as long as I'm here, I'll just pick up another 500 rd box. I get to the checkout counter, and the girl just looks at me funny. I said, "Yes, it's me again." She just laughed and started ringing up my order, and she asked, "Do you do a lot of shooting?" I said, "Yeah, but then there's also that other little thing that's coming - something called Barack Obama."

She just looked at me, apparently not at all amused, so I figure I struck a nerve and I'll just shut up. But as I was making that comment to the cashier, another employee, a guy in his early 20s, had been walking by and heard it. He didn't miss a beat, and said, "Yup! Get it now while it's cheap!"

Re: 762x39 Sale at Academy Sports?

Luft, I too heard the sale will end today (11/01). I also heard that stores are still getting shipments so there still may be a chance to get some/more.

JJ, my understanding about the Monarch ammo, in all calibers, is that the blue boxes are steel cased Russian Barnaul and the green boxes are brass cased Serbian Privi Partisan. I have read that Privi Partisan has good brass and the right primers to be reloadable.

Very nice. I bought another 500 round box on the 30th and I made out due to the cashier's poor math skills. She asked how many were in the box. (I knew but was playing dumb) I told her, Well there is 500 rounds in the case and 20 rounds per box. She says ok 20 boxes then and rings up only 20.. Hey I got out with 100 rounds free no complaints here. Nowhere near as good of a deal as you got tho.. :coolbeer:
